If Christianity never existed (Christians, just play make-believe for a sec) what would W. art have been like?
I just ask because I’ve taken classes in many disciplines, art, philosophy, humanities. It seems that the overall direction of not only Western art (be it painting, sculpture, anything) but architecture and philosophy had been largely dictated by Christian thought. What do you think Western art, architecture and philosophy may have been like with no Christianity? Would another religion have filled the void? Would the art be purely secular? What might the subject matter be? This is a hypothetical question ONLY. This is not a battle ground for atheists to bash Christians or for Christians to preach to me about how stupid this question is. If you don’t like to think about hypothetical situations, I recommend finding another question where you can vent your beliefs.
wefmeister: This question is for anyone, not just Christians.
If Christianity never existed we’d be 2000 years more advanced in all areas, particularly science and culture. Europe would have been influence by its various native Pagan religions that existed at the time. Art and culture definitely would have been much different because you have to remember events such as the Crusades, the Inquisition, various Holy Wars, and the Dark Ages would have never happened. This had a heavy impact on history. Also, the destruction and censorship of great works of art considered to be pornographic and or blasphemous, and the persecution of the artists wouldn’t have happened. Missionaries destroying (converting) smaller “heathen” religions and cultures wouldn’t have happened. The scientific method wouldn’t have been criminalized nor ancient medical knowledge lost for a millennium. You wouldn’t have had the endemic of Bubonic plague or Syphilis. All things things had an profound effect on the culture.
You wouldn’t have all those old church buildings because (most) Pagans didn’t build any temples or churches, they worshiped outside in nature under trees. You probably would have had a lot more artwork involving trees for this reason. Many ancient trees would have still been with us and not cut down. There would have been a lot more emphasis on Nature.
As far as the quality of art work itself being effected, if you look at the art done prior to the advent of Christianity in Europe you’ll notice it’s a much more detailed and realistic. Then look at the artwork done after Christianity came into play, it’s primitive, morbid, and degraded. The shift in subject matter from the Classical Age to the Christian Dark Age was stark. The only acceptable works of art were scenes from the Bible or those depicting great ‘Christian’ events. Art was debased into Christian propaganda – anything not directly relevant to the needs of the Church was ignored.
The vast network of roads, the aqueducts, the heated public baths, indoor plumbing, glass windows and so much else invented by the Greeks and Romans simply fell into disuse when Christianity spread. It wouldn’t be an overstatement to say that the culture withed as result.
If you want to see what the art work would have looked like, take a look at some Old Norse, Old Celtic, and of course Greek art. European culture and art wouldn’t have looked Asian by any means, it would still be distinctly European.

After the Six Day War, the Ministry of Religious Affairs of Israel began the excavations aimed at exposing the continuation of the wall. The excavations lasted almost twenty years and revealed many previously unknown facts about the history and geography of the Temple Mount.
The tunnel exposes a total length of 500m of the walls, revealing the methods of construction and the various activities in the vicinity of the Temple Mount. The excavations included many archaeological finds along the way, including discoveries from the Herodian period (streets, monumental masonry), sections of a reconstruction of the Western Wall dating to the Umayyad period, and various structures dating to the Ayyubid, Mamluke and Hasmonean periods constructed to support buildings in the vicinity of the Temple Mount.
“Warren’s Gate”, lies about 150 feet into the tunnel. This sealed-off entrance has been turned into a small synagogue called “The Cave”, by Rabbi Yehuda Getz, since it is the closest point a Jew can get to the Holy of Holies, assuming it was located at the traditional site under the Dome of the Rock.
At the northern portion of the Western Wall, remains of a water channel, which originally supplied water to the Temple Mount, were found. The exact source of the channel is unknown, though it passes through an underground pool known as the “Strouthion Pool”. The water channel was dated to the Hasmonean period and was accordingly dubbed the “Hasmonean Channel”.
The biggest stone in the Western Wall often called the Western Stone is also revealed within the tunnel and ranks as one of the heaviest objects ever lifted by human beings without powered machinery. The stone has a length of 13.6 meters and an estimated width of between 3.5 and 4.5 meters; estimates place its weight at 570 tons.
Adjacent to the tunnel lies a museum called “The Chain of the Generations Center” – designed by Eliav Nahlieli. The impressive site, which incorporates ancient and modern Jewish history, includes an elaborate audiovisual show, and nine magnificent glass sculptures created by glass artist Jeremy Langford.
