Peru is world famous for its Retablos. The great art of making Retablos has been passed on from generations. Here, we look at three of the greatest names in Peruvian Retablo making industry.

The Quispe Family

Nicario Jimenez, the master craftsman was born in 1957 near a village in Ayacucho region. Due to the frequent violence around their village, the family decided to move to Lima in 1968. During the next few years, Nicario and his family members kept on learning the art of making Retablos from his father. Nicario himself studies at the University of San Marcos in Lima. In 1986, he got a chance to showcase his skills in the Lima gallery. It is where he was noticed by the international connoisseurs of Peruvian Retablos. Soon, the family not only opened their own shop but also visited neighboring countries and exhibited their crafts to the world.

The Jimenez Family

It is among the most recognized family in Peru. The brothers are fifth generation retablistas who have displayed their works at the most famous museums around the world. They use traditional potato-gypsum technique to build their retablos. As with other notable artists, the family lived in Quechua, a village in Ayacucho. The elder brother Claudio Jimenez won his first completion at the age of fifteen and is the prime architect of the Peruvian retablos. His siblings have promoted numerous family works in United States. In 2006, he received the award for the most outstanding artist of retablos in Peru. The artist has also featured in a film, “Against the Grain”.

The Lozano Family

The keeper of the trade, Alejandro Gallardo is a world famous Peruvian retablos maker. He currently resides in Salt Lake City where his works are in high demand around the country. His services are in high demand in Spanish community of North America.

Alejandro is a young craftsman who has learnt from Masters like Nicasio Jiminez. He has won numerous awards and has been featured in many international publications. If you are lucky, you will come across his Retablos in many of the southern Texas towns, near Mexico.
