There are many good knives out there – Forschner Victorinox, Chicago Cutlery, Wusthof, JA Henkels.
Look for a knife that is full tang – meaning the blade runs all the way through the handle and the handle is riveted on.
Some blades just run into the handle an inch, but usually they end up breaking and falling out.
Avoid knived that are serrated or advertised as “never need sharpening”. The serrations are a pain in the butt when you’re trying to cut stuff up. The serrations always seem to catch on the meat and tears instead of slicing.
Another thing to look for is a knife that is on the thick side (less flexible). If a knife is too thin, they become very flexible and can start bowing when you don’t want them to.
When you think of knives, you may not consider asking yourself which are “legendary†versus which are not; however, there are definitely certain types with this celebrated designation, including the famous Gerber knife.
About Gerber Knives:
Gerber knives have a long history of precision manufacturing and amazing performance. Their founder, Pete Gerber, designed them in the 1930s and in 1985 was eventually honored by Blade Magazine for his contributions.
Throughout the years, Gerber knives have been designed by some of the “biggies†in the blade creating industry, including Fred Carter, Bob Loveless and Blackie Collins. This is part of the reason that the company has been around for so many generations. In fact, quite a few Gerber knives have been passed from parent to child and friend to friend.
Gerber knives are typically utilized for a number of different purposes, including hunting and outdoor activities as well as for multi-purposes uses. This makes them ideal for the recreational sportsman or the professional military individual. As one might suspect, the typical Gerber blade is second-to-none and comes with a money-back guarantee, something that isn’t found on cheaper types of knives.
Gerber knives are also known for their innovative attributes, including special locking units and multi-tool add-ons, not to mention their enhanced grips of varying styles and substances. Truly, Gerber knives have been designed out of both a passion for the industry and a deep understanding of the needs of Gerber knife users.
Best of all, especially for those knife-buyers who are on a budget, Gerber knives are reasonably-priced. Consequently, they provide value at every level and are great for gift-giving purposes.
Buying a Gerber Knife:
Not sure which type of Gerber knife to buy for yourself or a loved one?
First, you need to consider how and where you’re going to use your Gerber knife. For example, do you require a Gerber knife with a serrated blade? Then the 3 ½ inch Gerber 0118 F.A.S.T. Tanto Folder could be a possibility, as could the 2 7/8 inch stainless spear point blade of the Gerber 1967 Mini Covert Fast Assisted Opener.
Next, you need to think about the size of the Gerber knife you plan to use. Do you need something particularly small? Perhaps a 1 7/8 inch Gerber Trendy could just fit the bill. Or are you looking for something a bit larger? In that case, a Gerber Powerframe Folder might be a better bet.
Finally, there’s nothing wrong with considering price. Certainly, as was previously stated, all Gerber knives are created and offered at reasonable rates, they do come with variable price tags. This means you can spend anywhere from about $15 USD to over $100 USD for a Gerber knife. Again, which one you want depends highly on the style you choose as well as the place from which you purchase your Gerber product.
Gerber knives: Definitely legendary, always dependable, and uncommonly sensible. No wonder the Navy Seals choose them for their needs. And you can, too.
